EHCP case study: Emma’s journey
Educational, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) writers are tasked with developing EHCPs that fully comply with the Children and Families Act. They must accurately interpret and adhere to the principles and statutory processes outlined in the SEND Code of Practice.
Background
Emma graduated from university with a BA in history and sociology. During her final year, she worked at a local youth centre, where she became aware of the challenges faced by children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
She was keen to find a role that would allow her to use the transferable skills she had gained at university in a way that would allow her to make a meaningful impact in her community.
Decision to become an EHCP writer
Researching careers within the education and social care sectors, led Emma to learn about the position of an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) Writer. She was attracted to the role because it involved summarising information, detailed writing and provided an opportunity to directly contribute to the well-being and future of children and young people with SEND. She also liked the flexibility the role offered, and the chance to work remotely.
Training and development
Emma’s training included workshops on the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice. She also attended group experienced EHCP Writers, learning how to interpret educational, health, and social care assessments.
Responsibilities
As an EHCP Writer, Emma’s responsibilities include:
- Collecting and summarising information from various reports and assessments.
- Writing clear, concise, and compliant EHCPs.
- Ensuring each plan accurately reflects the child or young person’s needs and the support required.
- Reviewing and updating EHCPs annually to ensure effectiveness.
Impact
Emma finds her work both interesting and mentally challenging. She takes pride in knowing that her contributions make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families. Her written communication skills are invaluable in maintaining high standards of clarity and detail in her writing.
